What threshed lamina strips (TLS) are

Threshed lamina strips are what a green-leaf threshing line produces from cured Virginia leaf: the lamina, torn from the midrib and broken into pieces within a controlled size range, with the stem removed to a separate stream and the fines screened out. Sold as TLS, or simply as strips, it is the form that goes straight into a manufacturer's blending and cutting line with no further primary processing.

For a buyer, that is the whole attraction. Whole leaf and unstemmed leaf still contain the midrib and need a threshing line; hand-stemmed and machine-stemmed lamina are de-ribbed but not sized. Strips arrive sized, cleaned, and, where the line includes a redrying stage, dried to a storage moisture that lets them be held for a long time. What you pay for is the processing and the certainty about what is in the package.

Inside a threshing line: conditioning, threshing, classifying, redrying

A typical line works in four stages. Conditioning raises the moisture of the cured leaf with steam and water until the lamina is pliable and will tear rather than shatter. Threshing passes the leaf through rotating threshers fitted with baskets whose openings set the size of the pieces that can escape; leaf is threshed in several stages, with lamina that has reached size removed at each. Classifying separates the stream by air and screens: lamina, being light and flat, lifts away from stem, which is dense and drops; fines pass the finest screens. Redrying then dries the lamina to a storage moisture, re-humidifies it slightly to a stable level and cools it before packing.

The line settings, thresher speed, basket size and classifier air, are what determine strip size and how clean the separation is. The leaf sets the rest: heavier upper-stalk leaf threshes to larger strips and more stem, thin lower-stalk leaf to smaller strips and more fines.

Strip size distribution and how it is specified

Strip size is described by sieve analysis. A weighed sample is shaken through a stack of screens and the share retained on each is reported, from the large strips retained on the coarsest screen down to the fines that pass the finest. A TLS specification states the distribution the buyer needs: typically a minimum share of large strips, because large strips give a better cut rag with fewer fines at cutting, and a maximum share of small strips and fines.

Specify the distribution in the screen sizes your own laboratory uses so that results are comparable, and expect it to be confirmed per lot by sampling. Strip size is also position-dependent, so a lot of tips strips will run larger than a lot of primings strips from the same line. Buying by position lets you use that to your advantage rather than averaging it away.

Stem content, fines and foreign matter limits

A clean threshing separation leaves very little stem in the lamina and very little lamina in the stem. Buyers specify a maximum stem-in-lamina, measured by hand-sorting a weighed sample, because stem in the strips shows up as woody particles in the cut rag and burns differently. Fines are specified as a maximum share passing the finest screen, since they are lost at cutting or end up as dust. Foreign matter and non-tobacco material should be nil; a threshing line's classifiers remove much of what the field and the barn leave behind, and pre-shipment inspection checks visually for the rest.

State all three limits in the specification with the method you will use to check them. The lot documentation reports the supplier's measurements; your receipt check confirms them.

Chemistry by stalk position in TLS

Threshing does not change the chemistry of the lamina, so TLS carries the nicotine, sugar and chloride of the stalk position and colour class it was made from. Our indicative nicotine bands run from about 0.8 to 1.5 percent for primings to 3.0 to 4.0 percent for tips, with the mid-stalk cutters and smoking leaf in between. Reducing sugars are grade- and crop-dependent; chloride is held to a buyer-specified maximum because it impairs burn.

Two cautions. Removing the midrib raises the nicotine of the lamina stream slightly compared with the whole leaf, because stem is lower in nicotine than lamina. And every published figure is an indicative range; the numbers that govern are the ones measured on the lot, sampled as packed, analysed to CORESTA methods and stated on the certificate of analysis. Ask for that certificate and read it against your blend targets.

Blend-ready: what TLS saves in your plant

A manufacturer buying strips skips the receiving line, conditioning, threshing, classifying and redrying stages, along with the stems, dust, energy and labour that go with them. Strips go from the container to the blending floor, where they are conditioned, cased if the blend calls for it, cut and dried. For a plant without a threshing line, strips are the only practical way to use Virginia leaf; for a plant with one, strips free capacity and simplify the supply chain at the cost of a higher price per kilogram.

Strips also make specification simpler. Because the material is already lamina, the buyer specifies what will be blended rather than what will be processed, and the certificate of analysis describes the blend component itself.

Packaging: cartons vs C48 cartons for strips, container payloads

Threshed lamina is normally packed in double-wall corrugated jute bags of about 50 kg, with an optional polyethylene liner, because strips are loose material that benefits from the protection. Cartons load to roughly 18 to 20 MT in a 20 ft container. Where a buyer prefers it, strips can be pressed into C48 cartons. Each package is labelled with grade, colour, crop year, lot reference and net weight, and the carton format, liner and label content can be specified by the buyer.

Shipments move on FOB terms at Port Qasim or Karachi, with a minimum of one container (20 MT minimum) by sea or 20 MT by land. The standard documentation package ships with the container: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate, the per-lot laboratory report and any pre-shipment inspection certificate.

Storage and shelf life of redried strips

Redried strips are the form of Virginia tobacco that stores best. Dried to a stable moisture and cooled before packing, and protected by carton and liner, they can be held for long periods in a cool, dry warehouse, which is why manufacturers build inventory in strips rather than in leaf. Storage still needs care: keep cartons off the floor, control warehouse humidity, inspect for the cigarette beetle and the tobacco moth, and fumigate under your own country's rules when needed.

Confirm with the commercial team whether the strips in your lot have been through a redrying stage and at what moisture they were packed, and plan storage to match.

Cost per kilogram of usable lamina

Strips carry the highest price per kilogram of the lamina forms because the supplier has done all the processing and absorbed the stem and fines yield. The right comparison is with the cost of producing the same strips from whole or unstemmed leaf in your own plant, including the leaf, the processing, the fines loss and the value recovered from stems. Plants with efficient lines and an outlet for stems often win that comparison; plants without them rarely do.

Freight favours strips slightly, since every kilogram in the container is usable lamina, and so does working capital, since strips can be held. Ask for a quotation against a full specification and work the landed cost per kilogram of lamina on your own blending floor.

A complete TLS specification names the stalk positions and colour classes; the nicotine range, reducing-sugar expectation and chloride maximum; the strip-size distribution by sieve; the maximum stem-in-lamina and fines; the moisture at packing with tolerance; the carton or C48 carton format, weight, liner and labelling; the quantity in containers, destination port, Incoterm and delivery window; and the sampling, laboratory and inspection arrangements.
