Flue-cured Virginia tobacco compared with burley, Oriental and dark leaf
Flue-cured Virginia, burley, Oriental and dark tobacco are different leaf families, separated mainly by how they are cured. That one choice sets the sugar, the nicotine, the colour and the taste, and it decides which leaf a blender reaches for. This page compares them side by side and shows where flue-cured Virginia fits.

Four leaf families, four curing methods
Tobacco leaf is usually grouped by how it is cured, because the curing method changes the leaf more than the variety or the field does. The four families a buyer meets most often are flue-cured Virginia, burley, Oriental and dark tobacco. Each is grown in different places, handled differently and used for a different job in a finished product.
Flue-cured Virginia is cured with heat carried through flues into a closed barn, so the leaf dries quickly and keeps its sugar. Burley is air-cured in open barns, slowly, with no heat added, and loses most of its sugar as it dries. Oriental leaf is a small-leaved tobacco dried in the sun. Dark tobacco is air-cured or fire-cured and ends up deep brown. The table sets the differences out in one place.
| Leaf family | How it is cured | Colour | Sugar | Nicotine | Character |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flue-cured Virginia (FCV) | Heated barn, heat through flues, about five to seven days | Lemon to orange, red | High | Medium | Sweet, mild, light body |
| Burley | Air-cured in open barns, several weeks | Light to reddish brown | Very low | Higher | Nutty, full, takes flavourings well |
| Oriental | Sun-cured, small leaf | Yellow to light brown | Moderate | Low to medium | Aromatic, spicy |
| Dark air-cured and fire-cured | Air-cured or smoked over fires | Dark brown | Low | High | Heavy, strong, smoky when fire-cured |
The ratings are relative. Inside each family the numbers move with stalk position, crop year and origin, so the table tells you what to expect, not what a specific lot contains. That is why lots are confirmed by laboratory analysis rather than described by family alone.
Flue-cured Virginia against burley
These two are the pair most people mean when they compare tobaccos, because they sit side by side in the American-blend cigarette. Flue-cured Virginia provides the sugar, the light colour and the sweet, smooth smoke. Burley provides the body, the nicotine strength and a nutty background, and because it holds so little sugar its leaf takes up casings and flavourings readily.
A cigarette made from flue-cured Virginia alone is mild and sweet. One made from burley alone is stronger and drier. Blenders combine them, with the Virginia share higher in lighter styles and the burley share higher in fuller ones.
Flue-cured Virginia against Oriental
Oriental leaf, grown in places such as Turkey, Greece and the Balkans, is much smaller than Virginia leaf and is valued for aroma rather than bulk. It is used in smaller percentages, as a seasoning, where flue-cured Virginia is used as the base. Buyers who ask for Oriental leaf and flue-cured Virginia together are usually building an aromatic blend with a sweet foundation.
Flue-cured Virginia against dark tobacco
Dark tobaccos are cured differently and used differently. Fire-cured leaf is smoked over open fires and carries that smoke through to the finished product, which is why it appears in cigars, pipe blends and smokeless products rather than light cigarettes. Dark air-cured leaf is heavier and less sweet than Virginia. The two families rarely substitute for each other, because the missing sugar and the added smoke change the product completely.
Why the curing method also shapes the grade and the price
Flue-cured Virginia is graded by stalk position and colour, because those two things predict how it will behave in a blend, and the same logic does not carry over directly to the other families. A lemon lug leaf and a mahogany tip leaf can both be FCV and still be very different products. Burley and dark leaf are graded on their own scales.
For a buyer this has a practical effect. Comparing a price per kilogram across leaf families is meaningless without the grade and form, and comparing two FCV quotes is only fair when the stalk position, colour class and processing form match. The grades reference explains how FCV is graded, and the catalogue lists the grades we offer with current prices.
Where flue-cured Virginia is grown
Flue-cured Virginia is a global crop, grown in Brazil, China, India, Zimbabwe, the United States and Pakistan among many other countries. Pakistan's crop comes from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the plains districts of Swabi, Mardan, Charsadda and Nowshera and the sub-mountain districts of Buner and Malakand are the main growing areas. The Pakistan origin page describes the districts and the crop calendar, and what FCV stands for covers the name itself.
What we trade
FCV Tobacco Limited trades flue-cured Virginia leaf. Our catalogue also lists a small number of dark air-cured and rustica lines, shown in their own table, because some buyers ask for them alongside FCV. We supply raw leaf only: we do not sell cigarettes, hand-rolling products or tobacco-processing machinery. Minimum order is one container or 20 metric tonnes, FOB. Frequently asked questions
The curing method. Flue-cured Virginia is dried with heat in a closed barn and keeps its sugar, giving a sweet, mild smoke. Burley is air-cured slowly in open barns, loses most of its sugar and has more nicotine, giving a stronger, nuttier smoke. Most cigarette blends use both.
Burley usually carries more nicotine than flue-cured Virginia. Inside each family the figure moves with stalk position, crop year and origin, which is why a lot's nicotine is confirmed by laboratory analysis rather than assumed from its leaf type.
Rarely. Oriental leaf is used in small amounts for aroma, and dark tobacco is heavy and often smoky. Flue-cured Virginia is normally the sweet base of a blend, so it complements those leaves rather than substituting for them.
No. Flue-cured Virginia is graded by stalk position and colour class, which predict how a leaf behaves in a blend. Burley and dark leaf use their own grading scales, so a price per kilogram cannot be compared across leaf families without knowing grade and form.
Our trade is flue-cured Virginia. The catalogue also lists a small number of dark air-cured and rustica lines in a separate table, but we do not offer burley or Oriental leaf.
